Four Mothers tells the story of James, whose mother gave him up for interim care, whereupon he is then fostered and soon adopted by another woman. Finally, his birth mother manages to come back into his life when he is a grown man, and we see these two get to know each other. All four mothers love him and are part of who he becomes. As an adult, as he gets to know the mothers, he gets to know himself. Meanwhile, he becomes successful in the oil and gas business (a Texas boy) but has to deal with chicanery with clients. He has two marriages, one of them where he gets tricked, but he rises above it in both cases along with some funny comments from his friends. He begins to wonder, What is it with me and women? Finally, he ends up being stricken with a severe illness, which is a true test of faith, but he rises to that, too, with the help of the mothers, and even manages to find true love along that difficult path. Throughout it all, James is witty, intrepid, and never daunted. He manages to say, “It is what it is” in his Texan drawl to whatever fate deals him. It’s a story of an everyman hero who lives with love and loss gracefully and graciously.
