The Aim of this Study Guide, Red Dog, True Blue, Down the Rabbit Hole, is to appreciate the settings of Red Dog, True Blue. Changes in setting are part of Mick’s growth. Like Alice in Wonderland, he is big, then small, and then big. Relating to his son’s journey of being big and little and how the stretch from childhood to adulthood and reflections give a knowledge base that feeds wisdom. There are overlaps between the narrative Alice in Wonderland and Red Dog, True Blue. These overlaps are structural echoes based on storytelling and memory. Such as the truth about good memories Michael has at the end of the narrative, and the elements of the orientation, plot, subplot and characters. Characters Mick meets throughout his life have an embedded echo of Alice in Wonderland characters such as Taylor Pete and Vanno who represent the Guides. It is these guides who take him and the audience through the settings of time and place which are the setting of the novel.
