No one knew why the Janitor Carl Gussman chose to freeze himself upon death in 1997. No family, job or money waited for him, so he lay forgotten for nearly 1,000 years – until Lissa revived him to plumb his experiences of the late 20th century for a history project.

In a future where Carl displayed freezer-burned memory damage and a phobia of the nanotechnology needed for everyday life, he had no job skills, no income, and was a ward of university project that revived him. He was stranded in a future that had little or no use for him.

The considered opinion was that Carl would always be handicapped, alone, and hopeless, until he disappeared over 130 years ago.

Now Lissa has received Carl's secret journal, a view into the mind of the man she thought she knew. After so long, she wonders why she was contacted. As she reads deeper, she starts to become afraid as Carl reveals a mind always working a few steps ahead, and an understanding of the universe that no one ever grasped.

Now Lissa is terrified.

In his life, Carl never met a challenge he did not overcome and master eventually. Now he's alone in the galaxy, looking for a powerful race of aliens that don't want to be found. If anyone could find them, it's Carl, and Lissa knows that it will only be a matter of time before he does so.

Lissa knows she has to find Carl, and talk him out of his latest plan, before its too late, if its not already.
