Once bitten, twice shy
Lieutenant Alastair Norton has vowed to never let his feelings or desire rule his heart again.
After five years, he has come back to Haworth, to celebrate the Christmas holidays with his family at Longlands Hall.

No one in the neighbourhood had ever guessed that Mr Norton, who was so single-mindedly focused on his work, would ever remarry. However, last year after a business visit to Leeds, he happened entirely by chance to meet Mary Abberton, an old childhood friend, and the rest is history, as the saying goes.
Alastair had nothing against his father remarrying or his father’s new wife. She was not exceedingly beautiful, but she had a heart-shaped face and thick black hair, which only just had started to turn slightly grey at the temples. She seemed to be a kind and practical type of woman in her mid-forties, and there was no doubt that Alastair’s father was very fond of her.
Alastair had no problem with his new stepmother.

The problem is her son from her previous marriage, Alastair thought with a small sigh, Jeremy Abberton.
