Gujarati Thali : Delicious Healthy Platter And With Never Ending Varieties
by Kanchan Kabra
Gujarati thali or a gujarati platter is one of those meals which is not only delicious but a complete food, a balanced diet in that matter. It consists of a potato curry, 2 green vegetables, a lentil, a legume, wheat breads, steamed rice, farsan (snacks), sweets, salad, chutneys and many side dishes.
The side dishes, farsan and Gujarati dal and curry are of major importance in the thali, people like me who relish Gujarati thali at all times, prefer because of the repertoire farsan items which they offer. They are unique in taste, presentation. Any where in the world where Gujarati food is served, farsan will always top the list of menu, because of the variety they serve. Most of them are steamed, lightly spiced with sweet and sour taste. Tough if you do not like the sweet taste you may omit sugar. Honestly, it is not time consuming and most of the preparation can be done the day before and items like chutney and sweet can be prepared even a few days before.
When guest are served a gujarati thali, you can observe the charm on their face taking time to peep into their plate and observing the variety you have prepared for them. Before starting their meals, they will compliment you for the elaborated preparation you have done for them. They will feel greatly honoured, loved and cared. As I have always mentioned earlier in my books that first we eat with our eyes. If the sight of the meal will pleasant & satisfy us, half of the effort of the cook is done and your taste buds are satisfied.
So next time if you have guests, surprise them with Gujarati thali….and see the magic…begin….
