Just like humans, sharks can go through the trials and tribulations of life, happiness and sadness too…and more so being an outcast-handicapped toothless shark. Gums (a juvenile) is shy…timid…lovable…eats sea weed, and has a heart warming smile which becomes his great asset that helps him and also hurts him. Mother and sister love and accept him for what he is but his big tough father shark has a hard time accepting his son as a weed eater…not a fish eater. In one afternoon traumatic events changed Gums life into sadness, loss of love and home then confinement and abuse. A small striped fish with a tough sounding voice named "Sarg" became Gums life long friend. "A friend in need…is a friend indeed." Sarg helped Gums to find courage, which led to the freedom of many sea creatures including himself.

We all know that there were times in our lives when we were down and out…depressed and no where to turn, then a friend came into our lives giving us a little push from behind to boost our strength and courage. Hopefully the readers will personally feel the same emotions that Gums felt, and at the end of the story were ready to run up those steps to the top like Rocky Balboa, thinking....if Gums could do it....so could I.
