The world is in apocalyptic chaos and retired Headmaster Brown and his quirky wife, Doris, hide it out in their house. When they start noticing things have changed, hilarious episodes follow as they have to come to grips with the fact that they are not surrounded by "drug heads" and morons, but by creatures of a different nature. A man of dignity and decorum, it is extremely difficult for Lionel Brown to adapt to life where such qualities are no longer of any importance. At first they see people behaving "spastically", but when they realize these are not "people" anymore, they rename them "spazzes", and the state of the new world becomes the "Big Spaz".
This humorous tale follows Lionel, Doris and their dog, Amadeus (or "L'il Shitter "as Doris prefers to call him) on their journey of survival and discovery of the new zombified world. There are many mysteries to unravel: where have most of the people disappeared to, as the number of spazzes do not correlate to the numbers of people before the Spaz; who are behind the mysterious black helicopters and what do they want; why does the smell of beer and something sweet, possibly the smell of marijuana, fill the air around the spazzes?
We follow the changes in Headmaster Brown; we meet the extremely weird and colourful character of ex-Special Forces soldier Sean. Although Sean is a white farmer who had been in the Rhodesian Selous Scouts, he listens to American hip-hop. Is he to be trusted?
What will these unlikely heroes be able to do in a situation of global proportions? Can there be any truth to Sean's beliefs that the "Illuminati" are behind the "New World Order" in which they find themselves.
