This is the fictional story of Nick Ray who worked with Bill Gates during the early days of Microsoft; who had a role in the movie, Heaven’s Gate; and who joined the Heaven’s Gate suicide cult. He escapes death by pretending to swallow the lethal mixture of apple sauce, vodka and barbiturates.
The novel begins with Nick watching his own funeral. In the casket is the body of another member of the Heaven’s Gate cult with whom he has switched identities.
Now that Nick Ray has gone into hiding, he has time to recall the events which led him to join the cult. He blames it all on Bill Gates. After he graduates from college, he’s introduced to Gates by Paul Allen. He joins Microsoft where he helps develop programming code for the first personal computers. He has a love/hate relationship with Gates.
Following a nervous breakdown, he drives his family to Glacier Park in Montana where they are shooting the ill-fated Heaven’s Gate movie. He is cast as a Swedish emigrant and has an affair with the costume designer. After the film finishes shooting, Nick Ray returns to Microsoft. But he can no longer tolerate the long hours and bullying and leaves Microsoft to join the Human Individual Metamorphosis (HIM) group, founded by Bonnie Nettles and Marshall Applewhite. This group eventually becomes the Heaven’s Gate cult.
The climax of the novel occurs with the arrival of the Hale Bopp comet and Nick Ray’s bloody struggle for survival. He kills DO (Marshall Applewhite) with his bare hands. But he can’t save any of the others. He experiences the guilt of the survivor. More than ever, he searches for salvation.
On the run from the police, he experiences an epiphany and finally sees the gates of heaven opening. But it’s really a 16-wheeler out in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico loading up another crashed flying saucer. He believes the man directing the recovery operation is Bill Gates.
Is the narrator, Nick Ray, an actual witness and survivor or just an incredible liar with a pathological compulsion to reinvent his life? The novel is filled with the darkly humorous insights that come to the human mind when facing its own mortality.
