These four stories tell the tale of the Sixties. What was it like to live in this period? The first story is set on the Spanish island of Ibiza, where young Samuel White tries to make sense of his first sexual experience- with a married woman- only to find himself surprised by a very different encounter. The second story takes place in a large east coast city, seven years later. Sam is married with two children and teaching in a small college, but finds himself overwhelmed by the presence of young and attractive female students who live an innocent, uninhibited lifestyle. Torn between his Fifties upbringing and this brave new world, Sam finds his desire paralyzed. He realizes that he must act to free himself, but what will it mean for his wife and children? The third story is written by Sam himself about the small town where he grew up in the Fifties. It is a scorching satire, inspired by William Blake, that lays bare the impossible demands of living in those times with their virginal women who made marriage a leap in the dark propelled by overwhelming desire. The fourth story is set in the early Seventies on the West coast where the new counter-therapies are attempting to heal the marriages broken by the sexual revolution. It leads Sam to ask a further question. What was sex like for his parents in their day, and how had it affected his own childhood?
