Married on the rebound , former air hostess, Kay Martin, is shocked to discover her lover, Captain Graham Pender, believed dead in a Colombo plane crash some years earlier is alive and a hostage in a Ceylonese jungle. After being rescued Graham returns to Ireland and flying, and meets up again with Kay. Their love affair and Graham's career end abruptly when he is forced to return to Ceylon to face terrorist charges. Although cleared in Ceylon, Graham's superiors are unconvinced of his innocence and Kay, pregnant with Graham's child, loses hope in them sharing a life together.
Years later resuming her flying career Kay finds Celtic Airways is not the airline she once knew. Gone is the camaraderie between aircrews and a feud exists between married and unmarried air hostesses which can only be resolved in court. Captain Pender is now Chief of Flight Operations for the low cost rival airline MacDoolAer and when the couple are thrown together again by the growing friendship between Kay's vivacious nine year old and Captain Pender's family there is another chance of love but not without further setbacks, even tragedy.

Holding Pattern is a high-flying Irish airline drama and a love affair that refuses to die .
