A betrayal by her foster father ends with Sheila Grey's life turned upside down when given the choice between prison or military service. After sixteen weeks of military training she's led to believe she is in the free and clear. She resumes her track to becoming a nurse, but after an early morning wakeup call she finds herself on the way to Germany. Shortly after arriving, military scientists discover an asteroid plummeting towards Earth, but instead of letting other experts handle it, the space branch of the government takes matters into their own hands. Using an experimental weapon that the government military branch created they fired it into space not knowing what would happen. In the end part of earth was sent into the 30th century while the other half remains in the present.

Now stuck in Germany, in the 30th century, with a bunch of soldiers who believe women should not be in combat, Sheila is forced to get on with her life and push the worries of her brother and friends to the back of her mind. She has graduated from nursing school with honors but is encouraged to take more advanced training, or even become a doctor from one of her closest friends, and fellow students Anthony Gray; who like Sheila is a Lieutenant assigned to the medical branch of their division. Because he is her superior and arguing with his about this subject has failed in the past Sheila agrees to become a Nursing Practitioner, but that is as far as she's willing to go for now.
But after four years of working side by side it seems that life is getting back on track and things don't seem as bleak as they once did. Shelia is doing what she loves, taking care of children as a pediatric nurse; she's even taking charge during battle training as a Lieutenant. She has a handful of friends, and even a love interest.

It isn't until she receives a urgent call from Krista, her childhood best friend and Scott's girlfriend she finds out her older brother has been seriously injured and she is needed at home. While she is dealing with an injury of her own, she doesn't know whether discharge is in her future.
