HOW TO BE BAD: A NOVEL

MARK is a 28 year old bookseller who is in constant touch with his feelings. His whole identity is based on being a pleasant, non-threatening metrosexual who drinks in moderation, respects women and makes endless lists about stupid things. Although outwardly a modern man, Mark remains hopelessly stuck in the past, still longing for Caro, the girlfriend who dumped him in the sixth form.

At seventeen, CARO was an implausibly sexy, opinionated, druggy, amoral bitch. Ten years later, she’s just the same, but slightly taller. More fatale than any femme you are ever likely to meet, Caro has a confrontational attitude and supports herself through shoplifting and credit card fraud. To her, men are merely a means to an end: real love is something she has yet to experience. To the men in her life –especially Mark - Caro is the walking equivalent of heroin: a lethal, highly addictive drug they can’t live without.

So when an apparent chance meeting reunites these two old flames, Caro sees at once that Mark isn’t over her. And she makes him an offer. Having nothing but contempt for Mark’s lists, Caro gives him a list of her own: a list of three people she wants him to kill.

In exchange for this service, she will give herself to Mark, body and soul…
