Sports physiotherapist Maryke Louw has realised that many of the ankle sprains that she treats in her practice can actually be diagnosed and treated at home with a little bit of guidance.

She wrote this book to enable you to:
• Know which structures you have injured
• Know the extent of the damage to these structures
• Understand the healing process and alter your treatment accordingly
• Understand how to progress your exercises

Chapter 1 explains which structures around your ankle may be injured and will provide you with practical tips on how to diagnose your sprain, including pictures. It also explains when you should seek further medical advice.

Chapter 2 explains the healing process and how you can use your knowledge of this to help your recovery. It also provides a detailed explanation, with pictures, of 23 exercises that you can do to strengthen your ankle. It includes an example of a 6 week programme to treat a lateral ankle sprain.

You will find guidelines to help you decide when you are ready to return to sport in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 is written specifically for runners and contains a programme for a gradual return to running.

Chapter 5 lists some of the reasons why your ankle may not be recovering as expected.
