Sierra Madre Mountains 1846.
Rowan McClintock, a mountain man and trapper returning with his season’s catch of furs, discovers a wounded hunter caught in a cruel trap. Rowan carries the man down the mountain and at the trading post hears stories of a series of local attacks made by a strange and fearsome creature. It is a rogue beast out of history and built of enormous dimensions and untold savagery. A newspaper owner present amongst the listening trappers overhears the story and offers prize money to discover and capture the abnormality.
An assembled hunting party of volunteers sets off back to the mountains. But their way is not easy and as they search for the elusive beast they come across more snares and devices set up with lethal intent. They find they are confronted by more than just a ferocious creature of the wild and it will lead them into deadly confrontation with a dark and sinister being that is no animal at all.
