Set in South Africa, "In the House of the Feeble" is a short tragic Bildungsroman, a novella in which the protagonist, Michael Craig, must come to terms with the moribund situation of being institutionalised in a psychiatric asylum. He finds help from a close friend to make a success of his life. Michael successfully publishes a few novels, after which his former flame, Lillian, re-enters his life. He briefly enjoys the fruits of his success before he finds himself once again adrift in a sea of madness, ennui and a meaningless flirtation with another woman. Upon discovering his infidelity Lillian severs contact with him and he finds himself contemplating failure within the paradigm of being medically bound to a life of downward social drift; losing friends, money and sanity as he finally and tragically must make a decision that for one as young as he would kill anyone weaker than himself.
