Prologue
“I did tell you I'd make a horrible boyfriend, didn't I?”
Just the fact that he was using that as an excuse when love wasn't even in the equation here made me want to throw something at his face, an urge that hadn't gone away since the first day I had met him.
“This has nothing to do with being a good boyfriend, this has everything to do with being an arrogant smart-ass who doesn't know when to keep his nose out of something that doesn't need him!”
“I can be the judge of that.”
“And why are we driving again?” Wyoming was just as far as Utah, if not more, from Chicago, and I was about ready to scream. Gameboys could only entertain one for so long.
“The g-force involved in planes could trigger a panic--”
“My boredom is going to trigger a panic attack! And you're avoiding the subject! Why are we investigating a freaking serial killer? I thought we were a paranormal investigative agency, not private detectives!”
The look he glared back at me from the front seat had narrowed with ice. My stomach leaped to my mouth.
“Who is the boss here?”
“I'm not five.” I muttered.
“Fine, than who's the one here with the higher IQ and know-how when it comes to the paranormal?”
I crossed my arms over my chest with a pout. This was getting so old. And here I was just trying to do my job as the agency's clairvoyant by sharing my 'psychic' instincts of just how bad of an idea this was.
The bad idea in question was on an Indian reservation in Wyoming, where mysterious, gruesome deaths had been rolling in, with no lead as to the killer. The Cheyenne Council of the reserve had personally decided to call us in when the precautions given by the police and local detective failed to protect their medicine woman, who was crucial to the cultural survival of the tribe. According to Dimitri, the Cheyenne protested that shamans of any kind or gender are born and trained, not just picked out at random, and they had lost their key person in any sort of paranormal protection.
