Born at 26 1/2 weeks and weighing only 2 LBS, This is the five month journal of Isla’s stay at the NeoNatal Intensive Care Unit of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Canada
Isla’s Story is the daily log of what happened to Isla while she lay in the hospital initially fighting for her life and later becoming a mostly normal baby. The initial idea was to keep a log so family could keep up with what was happening and not spend a lot of time regurgitating daily events. It turned into a very detailed (including details about conditions and treatments) account of what a baby who is born at 26 weeks goes through to hold onto life.
Susan and Jacques live in Mississauga Canada with their daughter Isla Marie, who can now almost count to thirty-three! (ok, maybe not but she is a big fan of Dr. Seuss.)
They volunteer at Mount Sinai Hospital’s NICU and are members of the Parent Advisory Association, whose mandate is to advocate for the parents of premature babies.
As parent buddies (parents who are trained to counsel other parents who are going through similar circumstances with their own prematurely born child) they both realized that new parents had the same ups and downs, fears and concerns that they did when Isla was born and wanted to assist in any way they could to help those parents.
We hope you find this useful in understanding what we went through either because you are in the same place we were in or because you know someone in that circumstance and you want a better understanding of what they are going through.
If you are parents of a premature baby or future parent of a premature baby, we hope Isla’s story gives you hope in your unique situation.
