This Diver story narrates the struggle of Kent, New York Cities first openly gay fire fighter, as he tries to integrate himself into a homophobic, racist, and anti-Semitic fire brigade. Up until Kent’s arrival, other gay fire fighters, were systematically removed from the NYFD, but due to changes in policy, the department actually recruited among the gay community and Kent was their first placement. The men of Company #18 have been put on notice, to accept Kent or face disciplinary action, however being pressured to accept a homosexual in their close living conditions proves to be one of their greatest challenges.
