The Ketogenic diet is a low-carb diet that aims at achieving a metabolic state, called ketosis. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process that helps the body cells burn fragments of fats, known as Ketones, instead of glucose for fuel.
This diet involves following a high fat, moderate protein, and low- carb food plan, unlike the famous Atkins diet, where there is no moderation of proteins.
Why is it important to work towards Ketosis? It is important, because it is a process that helps the body to survive in times of hunger or when there is no food available. What’s more, this diet has been used to improve disease conditions, such as epilepsy, autism, Alzheimer's, cancer, and more.
The Ketogenic diet was conceived in the year 1924 by Dr. Russell Wilder at the Mayo Clinic and succeeded, but it fell out of fashion, due to the introduction of new anti-seizure medications in the 1940s.
This diet was proven successful after a toddler, by the name Charlie, who suffered from daily seizures, made a complete recovery after being on the diet for 5 years and is now seizure free as an adult. Despite trying all available anti-seizures medications, this diet was the only one that worked in his favor, and in 1994, his family started the Charlie Foundation- a global leader in promoting Ketogenic therapies.
Not only does this diet lead to reduction in occurrences of epileptic seizures, but it is commonly used for weight loss.
