Based on a true story of a young woman, wife of a hardened criminal, who in 1969 finds herself in the dock at the Old Bailey accused of murder. It is a vivid insight into the underworld life of London’s Soho, and 1960s gangland. With hilarious scenes, graphic sex and violence, the story is told with a brutal honesty by a woman who coped with everything that came her way.
It begins in Brixton 1956 with unusual family relationships and tales of early sexual abuse. Abandoned by her mother at the age of 14 she is robbed of her virginity by Michael Calhoun, who shows her the way on the other side of the tracks. The story travels through a string of blags and adventure, then Calhoun sets out to become Soho’s best ever pornographer. Soho bookshops rave about his work and soon it becomes a full time operation. In 1966 Detective Inspector Alfred Moody of the Flying Squad swoops and Calhoun’s luck finally runs out, he is sentenced to a 3 year stretch leaving Sandra and their children with precious little money.
Sandra, a stunning young woman, confident, oozing sexuality, emulating her husband’s front, now successfully explores opportunities in Soho and befriends Charlie Kray.
May 22nd 1969: Calhoun brutally murders Terry Hanley, once a hitman and minder for the Kray twins. Mick and Sandra are separately arrested and charged with the murder and go to trial in Court Number One at the Old Bailey nearly one year later. The story includes a gripping insight into doing time in Holloway one year before its renovation in 1970.
