“Ordinary People” by Judith Guest was first published in 1976. It was the author’s first novel. The story revolves around a rich suburban family, the Jarretts. It describes how the family members attempt to cope up with the aftermath of two traumatic events in their lives.

When the book was published for the first time, it received fair amount of critical praise and several awards, however, now it is best remembered for its film version which was produced in 1980.

The movie was the winner of four Academy Awards. It was declared the Best Motion Picture.
The book has established itself in several academic circles. It is now in the course of study at several American Secondary school English classes.
