Before this play, Odets had written several other plays but they were not produced. “Waiting for Lefty” was the first play by Odets to be produced.
The play was first staged by a New York theatre company the Group Theatre. The company had been founded by Harold Clurman, Cheryl Crawford, and Lee Strasberg. Odets was also a member of that company.
