Littsie O’Donnell, daughter of Irish immigrants, tells the story of growing up in colorful, dynamic early Cincinnati. When the cholera epidemic of 1832 devastates her family, she responds to the tragedy with bravery and determination. Her survival is assured when such prominent citizens as Daniel Drake, Anne Bell Bailey, Salmon Chase, Nicholas Longworth, and Frances Trollope help her. Littsie’s story involving pioneer life, the search for her lost sister, steamboats and slavery is one of high adventure and persistent courageous love. This book has won an IPPY award, is recommended by the Ohio Historical Center Outreach Program and is recommended in the Macmillan/McGraw Hill Social Studies Program.

What teachers say...

“Littsie of Cincinnati is a teacher/librarian’s dream come true! Based on actual historical events in 1832 this high interest book dramatically depicts life in the Cincinnati area in a page turner format. It is a fun filled way for students to receive marvelous historical information. I recommend it to all my elementary students either to be read aloud by a parent or devoured individually.”

“A story full of characters that make history come alive.”

“I read Littsie of Cincinnati to my students during the class before recess. At the end of the class they all wanted to give up recess so they could hear the next chapter.”

What young readers say...

“Your book, Littsie of Cincinnati was great!  It really made you feel like you were actually in the book. How did you think of such a great book? And you made it feel like you actually lost your sister and then found her at long last! It’s so touching and creative. On most books you know exactly what is going to happen, but in yours, you make it very suspicious.”

“I have just finished reading your book, Littsie of Cincinnati. It was a great book, The main character, Littsie O’ Donnell, was everything a person should be. She is strong, courageous, brave, and knows how to get by. One thing I really like about Littsie is that she faces her problems, not by crying but by moving on.”

“I liked the book, Littsie of Cincinnati. I especially liked it when Littsie found Megan.  I have one suggestion. I think you should write another book.”

The sequel to Littsie of Cincinnati, titled Littsie and the Underground Railroad was awarded a medal with the Children’s Moonbeam Award.  Her third book Jake and Sam at the Empty Abbey received a silver Children’s Moonbeam Award.
