Andrew Lang (1844 – 1912) was a Scots poet, novelist, literary critic, and contributor to the field of anthropology. He is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. The Andrew Lang lectures at the University of St Andrews are named after him. Preferring romance over realism, he admired their works as well as those of Alexandre Dumas Père, Henry Fielding, William Makepeace Thackeray, fellow Scot Robert Burns and many others.

'Lovely Ilonka' is a fairy-tale first published in 1903 as a part of the collection book 'The Crimson Fairy Book'. It tells us about a young prince who is willing to get married although his father forbids him to do that until he has done some great deed. So the prince is travelling across the land in a searh of his destiny. And on his way he meets Ilonka — a beautiful young girl who asks for a glass of water… How will this story end? Read ' Lovely Ilonka' and you will know!
