Luigi Musso was the son of an Italian diplomat who gained fame as a Formula 1 racer, first for Maserati and then Ferrari. He began racing in an outmoded Giannini which he entered in sports car races in Italy. By 1955 Musso was the top driver for the Maserati Grand Prix team. He changed to Ferrari following the '55 season. Luigi also raced sports cars throughout Europe at Le Mans, etc., and at Sebring International in the United States. Some of the drivers he teamed with included Formula One Grand Prix champs Mike Hawthorn of England and American Phil Hill from Los Angeles. It was an era of the single-seater F1 cars, and the Italian marques matched their British competitors, Aston Martin, Jaguar, etc., with a vigorous determination to win races.
