LYSISTRATA is a classic Old Comedy set during the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC). Wearied by 20 years of war, Lysistrata persuades the women of Athens to withhold sexual favors from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing them to negotiate peace with Sparta.
Aristophanes (c.446 BC - c.386 BC) was a comic playwright of ancient Athens. Eleven of his approximately forty plays survive, providing modern understanding of the Old Comedy genre. Little is known of his personal life.
