Malta’s history starts most likely before the Great Flood about twelve thousand years ago. Malta lies between Europe to the north and Libya and Africa to the south, and midway between the Suez Canal and the Straits of Gibraltar.
Malta is a small island nation in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea (123 square miles - 316 square kilometres). Malta’s geographical position, its natural great harbours and the islands’ ecological conditions are the basic constants that have shaped the historical tradition of this country. Malta was the venue of different cultures and peoples travelling the Mediterranean. It has an accumulation of many layers of history that together make up the nation’s collective psyche.
Represented in this booklet, is an overall experience of the embodiment of all that is Maltese, depicted through beautiful imagery and creative symbolism. Francis’ paintings combined with expressive prose by Joseph. S. Abela give the reader a perspective of looking through a window and thus providing a journey in time and space and an overview picture of the history, culture and customs of Malta and its people.
We have in fact an art exhibition in book-form that gives us an ‘Experience of Malta through the Ages.’
