Marian Nixon was originally from Superior, Wisconsin. She moved to Minneapolis after high school, training as a dancer and later entering vaudeville. She liked vaudeville, the stage, and dancing, but she opted to take a chance on becoming a motion picture actress. It was in 1918 that Nixon left a Los Angeles ballet troupe to try her luck in films. Her first, uncredited role, was in Rosita, a 1923 silent movie. Through hard work and good fortune Marian became a leading Hollywood film actress by 1929.
