David Gefflin wants what any self-respecting scientist wants: recognition and success. As he embarks on a search for a way to manipulate light and create something only dreamt of in the 18th Century, he discovers the road to success isn't straightforward and easy. His girlfriend, Merredin (Meekle) is worried, now that she knows his contract is winding down. If he doesn't have a breakthrough according to his contract and employer, Sinclair Forbes, he will soon find himself unemployed and relying on her for financial support. This bothers her. In the event he does find himself unemployed, she encourages him to ask support from her 'rich' parents. But David has problems with wealth and prosperity - especially the way Meekles parent's display their wealth. And his reason for propelling himself so hard into the project to manipulate light and achieve success has Merredin confused. And when he has a breakthrough a few weeks before his contract expires, David embarks on a dangerous path to protect his discovery and invention from his employer. But life is never that simple, and soon finds himself in a struggle for survival which may result in him losing everything as his former employer learns of his achievement and sets out to obtain it for himself, no matter that cost.
