Welton Keynes sees a job as male secretary advertised by Miss Ferriby of The Lawns in London. This is an old fashioned story of murder, robbery and séances, with a touch of romance. It was written in 1910 when political correctness in fiction was not even on the horizon, and the main suspect was often physically disabled or disfigured (as here) to make him or her appear more evil.
