They say there are three ‘rules’ which lead to the arrest of a murder suspect. Television has made them all familiar, motive, method, opportunity. Perhaps the trouble with the Avery case was deciding exactly what the motive had been. After all without a murder weapon, the method was open to virtually anyone, well any red blooded male and it seemed opportunities were readily available.
Life isn’t meant to be easy, but after countless years on the force, Blake didn’t expect to spend half the case chasing his tail. Brick walls he could handle, it was snakes and ladders he abhorred. Especially when some of the snakes were rather venomous, dangerous to society. Still, maybe thinking a long way outside the box would do a lot more than solve the obvious problem. Just so long as nobody ever discovered the cast of such a misdemeanour.
When Jeanette Avery is found blue and lifeless in her bedroom it wasn't clear whether it was an accidental death or murder. As events develop the police gradually put the pieces together, only even though they seem to fit perfectly most of them keep falling out repeatedly. When a familiar name crops up things take a turn for the worse, and then some, still life isn't meant to be easy. This is about determining motive, unravelling lies and making sure you haven't missed anything, obvious or otherwise. If you can get to the truth faster that DCI Blake perhaps you need a career in law enforcement.
