Carole and Jonathan and their two teenage children are driving down from their home in London to Carole's ancestral home. Her brother, Leslie Harrington, now Lord of the Manor, has asked them down for the weekend as he has an important announcement to make.

For the last twenty years Leslie has been living in the Manor House with his partner Elizabeth Jones, But Carole despises Elizabeth as she is just a village girl and not the right class for her brother.

The hatred boils up on the Sunday when Carole finds out that Elizabeth has slept with her husband Jonathan, even though Leslie had announced the night before that he and Elizabeth were to be married once her divorce to one of the estates gardeners is finalised.

At 04:30 on the Monday morning a shot is heard and a body is discovered in the Waterloo Room.

Detective Inspector Frank Davies, who has only recently moved from Manchester to Redhouse, on promotion is on his first weekend call when the 999 call came in about the shooting. Together with Sergeant Carter they arrive at the Manor House.

On the face of it there were only five people in the house at the time of the shooting. Carole, her family and Elizabeth. It transpires that although they thought Leslie was in Redhouse Hospital, after a car accident, he was there soon after the shot was fired.

It took the Inspector some weeks to unravel the secrets that abounded not only in the Manor House but within the village as well. If it hadn't been for James, Carole's son, it is possible that the killer would never have been found.
