Seeing someone experiencing a medical emergency can be frightening, no matter what age you are. But it doesn't have to be if you know what's happening and what to do.

The "I Can Be a Hero" series is designed to help you learn how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a medical emergency and know what to do to help and when you need to call 911. Each book in the series covers a different medical situation. In this book, six-year- old Hunter will help you will learn about diabetes and diabetic emergencies.

As an Advanced EMT and volunteer firefighter, I've seen plenty of medical emergencies. I've also seen where young children were the ones that stepped up as the hero. This book is designed for children ages 8–10 but is beneficial for all ages. It's inspired by a true story that happened between my then 6-yr-old son and my dad. Keywords are in bold and can be found in the glossary at the end.

Reaching out today to inspire the world's first responders of tomorrow.
