Here is the brutally honest account of my first two weeks of sobriety. It covers the highs and lows of a search for meaning and presence. After a lifetime of alcohol addiction, I found myself, a writer, faced with the prospect of drowning in the bottle or taking my health and sanity into my own two hands and shaking some sense into it.
It was a documentary by comedian and social commentator, Russell Brand, that was the turning point for me. The inspiration I felt while watching it was tantamount to a spiritual awakening and in that moment I made Russell my higher power and through a diary I sought to capture that essence of sobriety and make it work for me.
I had no support system and was terrified of turning up cold at an AA meeting. The two weeks that I have documented, show a woman who wants to be well, a woman who takes a tumble into a soggy relapse and arrives at the end of the fortnight ready to front up to a meeting and change her life, one day at a time.
