Furtado remembers: "I went to see The Philosopher Kings both times they played in Victoria, and both times they said, 'You gotta pertained to Toronto and do some even more demos.' I was, like,' I do not understand. I'm in school, I want to compose, I'm learning to play guitar - blah blah blah.' Then one day Gerald just called and stated, 'You're concerning Toronto.' So I went for two weeks and it was awesome. The 3 of us absolutely clicked. Gerald and Brian are incredible - wise and charismatic and terrific to work with. They created the most positive creative environment you might think of."
The product they recorded throughout those treatments ultimately led to Furtado's promotion with DreamWorks Records (where she was signed by AandR exec Beth Halper). Eaton and West (recognized collectively as Track and Field) came on board as production partners.
Amongst additional things, Whoa Nelly! is a melding of Furtado's accumulated musical motivation. The singer-songwriter grew up with lots of mainstream pop - Abba, Lionel Ritchie, Madonna, Paula Abdul - however in her formative years, she became obsessed on its urban manifestation. An infatuation with children Kris Kross led to an embrace of very early '90s RandB like New Edition, Bel Biv Devoe, Salt-N-Pepa and Jodeci. Furtado informs: "On my 12th birthday one of my buddies bought me a Mariah Carey tape."
