I cleared my head of every terrifying, paralyzing thought racing through my mind. It was one thing for me to die…no big deal. I was going to heaven. But I would not be responsible for anyone else getting killed, or worse, hurt badly. And I knew only too well what that terrible voice was capable of doing… But I certainly would not be bait. Nor would she. I took a deep breath and started making plans to get us both out of this alive.
“That’s it, back out of here and drive to that red light at the bottom of the hill. We’re going to take a little drive…visit the pretty horses. I believe you know where that is.”
“Ok,” I said, voice steady now, but an icy trickle of fear and hatred was growing inside. Ahead of my truck, I could see a line forming at the light, and I had never been so thankful that people, quite a lot of them, actually, were moving around this early.
I turned toward the light and prayed fervently for courage…and that the air bags would keep us alive...and floored the accelerator.
