The present volume is the product of a ten-day workshop on Political Parties and Parliament supported by the Ford Foundation. It is also the second in the series, Upgrading Political Science in Nepal started by the Nepal Centre for Contemporary Studies (NCCS). Many other activities in this connection have also been carried out by the centre. Publication of journals, bulletins, occasional papers, organization of lecture programmes, fieldworks etc., are such regular events. An attempt has been made to involve as many prominent politicians, academics, lawyers, entrepreneurs, journalists and foreign intellectuals as possible in the workshop. To our satisfaction, our endeavour was quite successful as most politicians, including the former prime minister, leaders of the opposition, Speakers of the House of Representatives, President of the National Assembly, members of parliament and other relevant persons accepted our request to participate in the workshop. We, therefore, feel that the workshop participants (young political scientists) were benefited much by them. Since they are the real actors in politics, intense interactions with them have helped us tremendously.
