This book illustrates some of the changes in the villages of Newby and Scalby situated on the northern outskirts of Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast. It includes many of the older streets and some of the buildings as well as scenes of village life from a bygone age before the advent of motorised transport. These contrast sharply, in many cases, with the recent photographs that have been taken to highlight the way the character of villages has altered. The villages were served by a station at Scalby, on the Scarborough & Whitby Railway, that was opened in 1885. This stimulated the growth of Scalby, when building materials were brought in to construct new houses. This was an important stage of development in a process which still continues today. Despite this progress Scalby still retains its historic heart and this book also illustrates some of the features that have survived.
