Being bit Ivan knows well he is infected. He runs, but is caught. Not by the soldiers or other vampires, but by a strange woman named Alex Kyzer. She injects something in his blood to stop the infection part way and says she needs him. She says he has a psychic link the main vampire and she needs him for that.
But who exactly is this woman? Ivan can't really say because she doesn't seem all that human herself. But given the circumstances he has no one else to trust.
