God saved me, my unborn child, and my seventy-five-year-old grandmother from the second floor of a burning house in 1969 in the town of Freeport, Illinois.

It was in the winter, when I was awakened by the noise of running footsteps coming from downstairs. I opened my door to see what was happening, but the heat and smoke forced me to shut the door quickly.

I called to my grandmother, whose room was across the hall from mine, but she yelled to me to get out of the house. I didn’t know it at the time but she had thrown her suitcase out of the window and jumped.

There I was, trapped in my room, with no way out. I couldn’t open the only window in the room because it was stuck. Then I called on the name of the Lord and I asked him to save my baby. I touched the window and it came all the way up to the top. I knew it was the Lord because he heard me crying out to him. And I jumped out of that window that day on the word of the Lord,

“When you call to me, I will answer. I will be with you when you are in trouble. I will save you and honor you” (Psalm 91:15).
