Francis McNally is back.
The PI we met in Dark Time (2014), the one who promised results in an earlier case but failed to deliver and has been beating himself up ever since, gets a chance to redeem himself. But to solve this assignment he will have to travel to the northernmost reaches of Canada—to the territory of Nunavut at the edge of the Arctic Circle.
And this time around there are complications. McNally is ten-years older and semi-retired. Age has robbed him of certainty, relacing it with doubt. Nunavut itself is rife with dissension over its modern economic future amid the still formidable power of Inuit myth and tradition. Worst of all, his wife Linnie is battling an illness, and it’s a fight she seems destined to lose. Yet even she knows that her husband won’t achieve any peace, until he’s balanced the scales for that earlier failure.
“Go,” she says.
And he does. Northward.
