Excerpt:

Easing my delicate steps, I darted in front of the vehicle lights and onto the trail, sending a few small stones flying as I went. The men turned around hurriedly, managing to glimpse only a brief sight of my tail as I disappeared from their view. Satisfied with my performance thus far, I endeavored to encircle them once more, and proceeded around the other car stealthily, the darkness concealing me. I quickly looked at their positions, hoping to judge my best course of action. Three were facing away from me, still convinced that I was in front of their vehicles; two were facing the sides, their flashlights illuminating nothing but the gloomy darkness; one was staring directly at me, pointing his pistol at my head. He was grinning.

"Hey fellas!" he called out, his eyes unmoved. "I got him!"

Within moments there were five additional pistols and an equal number of flashlights aimed at me. I was frozen.

"Son of a bitch," one of them murmured, astonished look on his face. "How do you know it's ours, Glenn?"

"You can tell he's a werewolf cause he's not being hostile. He knows we've got guns aimed right at his head. A normal wolf would be growling and barking at us and shit." Glenn's satisfied smirk was etched on his face like a permanent tattoo. I flashed my teeth at them and growled, hoping to disprove his theory.

"Yeah, you do that again wolfboy, then we'll know you're just a plain ol' wolf," came the snarky reply, "and there are no hunting laws on wolves." Glenn chuckled, and the others followed suit. "Why don't you come here into the light." He motioned for me to step in front of the vehicle lights. I had no choice but to oblige. Attacking would have ensured my death, and regardless, I had no interest in killing any humans. My mind tried to unlock a way for me to escape the mess my hubris had put me in as I walked, their guns and flashlights following me. I listened to them prattle.

"Man, he's just doing what you tell him to."

"Of course! He understands English."

"So what do we do with him?"

"We better lock him up in one of the cars, bring him to the station."

"Think he'll cooperate?"

"He's got no choice."

"What if he bites one of us or something crazy like that?"

"He's not goddamn wild, Lucas, he knows any additional offense will only aggravate the charges against him."

"Huh."

"Turn around!" Glenn barked an order at me and I did as I was told. I sat down on the trail obediently, facing them and both vehicles, the lights shining on me like a thousand suns, preventing my escape.

"Let's see your human form, werewolf," Glenn said. The six pairs of eyes were transfixed on me as I began to shift, my body arching upwards, the spine straightening out. The fur receded from my skin and my front legs turned into arms, the paws into hands. My hind legs lengthened and turned fully human, increasing my height further, and my previously threatening jaw retracted, the sharp, imposing teeth shrinking in size and menace. I stood before them, naked, as a human.
