Excerpt:

You’re lovely. I like the confidence you exude in your photo.

Brenda’s heart pounded so hard she was certain it would slam through her ribcage and fall on the floor. In her reply, because her mother always told her a reply was polite and necessary even if it was through a computer, Vickie wrote, Thank you. I’m flattered. I wish they were bigger or better shaped.

And that was that, Vickie decided. No one ever kept a private conversation going on Tumblr. She never expected a response.

When she checked in later she was surprised to find a response once more.

Don’t run yourself down. I don’t it when women say they hate their bodies. No one’s perfect. I spent too many years hating my body—and my breasts especially—before I got over that. I mean, look at mine. They’re not perfect, but I love them. Now.

She knew she should have left it alone, but Vickie found she couldn’t. She hated to leave someone hanging at the end of a conversation, no matter how casual it was.

You’re right. Self-loathing is ugly. And you do have nice boobs—judging by your picture, at least. I just wish mine were a little more like they used to be before I had kids. Thanks again.

With the “thanks again” sign off Vickie considered the conversation over.

It wasn’t.

Later that night she showed Rob the short exchange of messages. He raised his eyebrows. “She’s kind of hot.”

Vickie rolled her eyes at him.
