Periscope is a new and innovative app that is a live video streaming app that can be used on both the iOS and Android operating systems. It was created by Joe Bernstein and Kayvon Beykpour when they traveled abroad in 2013. It was spurred when Beykpour was in Istanbul and heard about protests happening in Taksim Square and he could only get text updates via Twitter but couldn’t see what was happening. Their original company was acquired by Twitter in January 2015 before the official product was official launched. There was speculation on the amount paid for acquisition as the figure was never released. It was formally released on March 26, 2015 with the Android version being released on May 26, 2015.
