The whooping cough, other wise known as pertussis, is exploding nationwide.

As of May of this year, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with state officials declared the spike of whooping cough cases in the state of Washington to be an epidemic.

More than 27,000 cases and 13 deaths have been attributed to the whooping cough this year alone. What is scarier yet is that we are trending to have the worst outbreak in history.

In the coming months the United States is bracing itself for the peak of pertussis season, as it generally hits its peak during the late summer and fall months.

Prior to the 1930’s when the first pertussis vaccine was developed, it wasn’t unusual for the whooping cough to claim 5,000 to 10,000 lives annually. Since the vaccine came on the market, deaths from pertussis have dropped to well below 50 a year.

What has the science community and the health care providers on edge is how quickly the cases are climbing out of proportion. It was most recently that in 2004 that the United States experienced a spike in levels (approximately 25,000 cases) that we haven’t seen in well over 50 years.

The science community and CDC are fully aware and have been able to follow/ forecast trends with cases of this bacterial pathogen. Cases of whooping cough have been blazing up in small pockets across the United States in 3 to 5 year cycles.

On a whole, whooping cough is on the rise and is increasing all across the United States.

There are many theories that are being researched into why the sky rocketing incidences have recently been occurring. The health care systems are working around the clock to try and identify what is exactly happening.
