Playing Out of Your Mind (Moving Beyond Swing Mechanics) is the third book in the series that began with Just Hit The Damn Ball! (How to Stop Thinking and Play Your Best Golf). The story is based on actual events at the Cedarbrae Golf and Country Club in Markham, Ontario, Canada.
How long have you played the game? Are you constantly improving or riding a roller-coaster of inconsistency? This book is based on notes compiled from over eleven-thousand lessons with once-a-week golfers, who have a reasonable knowledge of swing mechanics but are trapped in an endless cycle of fault-finding and error correction.
Playing Out Of Your Mind gives you the tools to break this cycle.
The conflict begins when the protagonist (Jonathan) is forced to cancel his weekly game by the appearance of an author conducting a book-signing event. His regular playing partners decide to forego the game in order to obtain a signed copy of the author's latest book. The author attempts to compensate Jonathan for the inconvenience by offering to accompany him during a nine-hole game. Jonathan's initial reluctance quickly fades as he sets out to prove the author is a fraud.
After Jonathan bogeys the first two holes, the author asks him a series of questions that reveal underlying beliefs about how the game should be played. Each chapter concludes with a lesson that golfers can easily apply to their unique skill level.
The first lesson reveals the mental trap of judging a hole as easy or hard. Removing the emotional attachment is the first step to breaking the cycle of repeating past mistakes. A series of simple questions require Jonathan to evaluate his beliefs about practice and course management. In the final lesson, the author proposes a new method of scoring that helps Jonathan feel good about his game; a complete reversal from his automatic tendency to beat himself up after a poor shot.
If you've ever hit a perfect shot, then you have the ability.
Playing Out Of Your Mind (Moving Beyond Swing Mechanics) offers guidelines to help you re-create those shots.
