A history of Zambia from British South Africa Chartered Company rule to the present. I concentrate on wildlife conservation and management, and from 1966, on my conservation efforts, for two years attempting to save the Zambian black rhino (1987-88), but, in particular, on my attempts to implement my Landsafe protective framework for the customary (chiefdoms) and public (protected areas) commons (2002-2010). I then contrast the deterioration of Zambia with similar developments in the UK and US and elsewhere, ending with the destruction of the world's biodiversity and the global warming catastrophe. I suggest a way forward for Zambia by considering my draft Commons Charter. The book includes my work in Bechuanaland/Botswana, Rhodesia, Tanzania, South Africa and the Congo Republic.
"The book is unique and makes a massive contribution to the history of Zambia. No-one else has ever had the courage to recount first hand what went on during the period."
Peter de Vere Moss, former District Officer in Northern Rhodesia, and wildlife biologist, Zambia.
