The Psychology of Positive Thinking

If you don’t know what positive thinking really is or have the wrong idea about it, you will never learn how to do it. In the latter case, you might even fall into the opposite direction. So, we will start by understanding what positive thinking really is.

Some people often mistake positive thinking for blind optimism. For them, positive thinking means disregarding or denying the negative aspects of life. A common analogy is viewing the world through rose colored glasses; everything looks much better than they seem. Such is an incorrect understanding of positive thinking. It can even be dangerous. People can only deny the negative aspects for so long. When they finally give in and realize that reality is not how they thought it was, it can bring them down to the point of depression. This is what it means to fall into a direction completely opposite to the goal of positive thinking.

Instead of denying the negativities in this life, positive thinking means facing them using a positive outlook. In positive thinking, you are aware of the realities of this life – both the positive and negative aspects of it. Instead of pushing aside the negative and thinking that only the positive exists, you come up with ways to overcome them. As such, you can turn the worst of situations into something beneficial. It doesn’t mean that you always succeed in challenges. But, even when you fail, you have gained something which allows you to keep going instead of sulking in one corner. Positive thinking also involves seeing the best in people and framing yourself along with your abilities in an encouraging light.
