Late one winter’s afternoon, Jake discovers an old bureau in his grandmother’s house with a strange handle in the shape of the Lincoln imp. His grandmother tells him that if you knock three times it will summon the devil. Caught between a belief that the world he lives in is dull and a wish that magic of some kind existed, he can’t help himself and strikes three times.
