“Johnny Got His Gun” by Dalton Trumbo was first published in September 1939. The author had written this anti-war novel in 1938.

It was the winner of the National Book Awards for the Most Original Book of the year 1939.

The author had got the idea to write this novel early in the 1930s. It was inspired after reading an article about the Prince of Wales’s visit to a Canadian veterans hospital to see the condition of a soldier who had lost his limbs and senses.

He started writing the first draft of the novel after about seven years in 1937. The book was published two days after the outbreak of Second World War. Although it was written and published in wartime, it is a pacifist piece of literature.
